Mohonk Mountain House is one of those places that typically evoke one of two distinct reactions when you mention it to someone: (a) they’ve never heard of it, and wonder what civilized place could have such a strange name, or (b) they squeal with delight that someone else knows about this special place, and proceed to tell you how many generations of their family members have been visiting it since … well, since long, long ago.
Assuming that you fall into the first category, here are the basics: Mohonk is a sprawling, century-old hotel/resort located near New Paltz, NY — about 90 miles north of New York City, just west of the Hudson River. It was opened in 1870 by Quaker twin brothers Albert and Alfred Smiley, and the main buildings — some wooden, some stone — were built over the period of 1879 through 1910. As a Wikipedia points out, it sits on the edge of a small lake (Lake Mohonk, what else?) that’s a mere half-mile long, and 60 feet deep; but it’s big enough to support a modest amount of fishing, swimming, boating, and (in days past) ice-skating. Visitors can also hike, climb nearby mountains, play tennis, ride horses, and various other activities.
Or … you can just relax. There are quiet corners everywhere, dozens (maybe hundreds) of rocking chairs, lots of warm, toasty fireplaces, and dozens of little wooden cupolas scattered around the lake where you can read a book, chat with a friend, or just stare off into space and think about nothing at all. There’s no noise from nearby traffic — it’s at the top of a smallish mountain, on 2,200 acres that adjoin another 6,400 acres of the Mohonk Preserve. There’s no loud music, there are no televisions in the guest rooms, no cars or motorboats or jet-skis or sources of noise.
Various notables have visited Mohonk over the years, including industrialist John D. Rockefeller, naturalist John Burroughs, industrialist Andrew Carnegie, and American presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Chester A. Arthur. While I was there this past weekend, the actor Alan Alda was wandering around the main lounge, undisturbed by any of the other guests. It’s probably worth mentioning that Mohonk was also the setting of a 1994 feature film, The Road to Wellville, starring Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Broderick.
As for the thousands of other undistinguished guests and visitors: it’s amazing how long many of us have been coming here, and it’s intriguing to see how many multi-generational families come here for holidays (Easter, Memorial Day, Memorial Day, and Thanksgiving are the main ones, I think) as well as family reunions and other special events. My wife first discovered Mohonk in the mid-1970s on a visit with her mother, while I was away somewhere working ’round-the-clock on some ill-fated computer project. We first brought our children here in 1983, and have typically returned once or twice a year since then … and after nearly 30 years, it’s amazing to see how little has changed.
But there have been a few changes. Notwithstanding the Quaker heritage of the original Smiley brothers, who decreed that there would be no drinking or card-playing when they first opened their establishment, there is now a small cocktail lounge tucked away in a corner room. Meals used to be a somewhat mediocre event, served in a huge dining room that was built somewhere around 1902; now the cuisine has improved considerably, and it’s also possible to order room service meals. And, wonder of wonders, there is now free WiFi service throughout the hotel … but there are still no televisions in the guest rooms.
It’s hard to capture all of this in a series of photographs, even though I have a Flickr collection with roughly half a dozen different sets of family-related photos that I’ve taken here since the mid-1980s. But this time, I tried to capture as many different scenes as possible — and I was lucky enough to get one brief period of afternoon sunshine, which allowed me to take some HDR images of the scenery.
If the photos look sufficiently intriguing, take a look at the Wikipedia article, or visit the Mohonk website. Who knows — maybe we’ll see you there on our next visit…

Making Dry Flies For Fly-Fishing – The Art Of Making Life Like Bugs

Fly fishing is gaining popularity as it is a very interesting sport and there are many people who are participating in this activity. Novices at fly-fishing prefer to purchase all the gear they require including artificial flies. However, once they experience the thrills of the fishing activity, they are hooked on to it. They then think of making their own artificial flies to be continuously involved in the sport during the off-season too. Artificial flies may be a bit tricky to make but some of them are within the ability of most anglers. Some of them are quite easy enough to be made even by children, and this can help to get them interested in the fly-fishing activity.
The earliest use of artificial flies was made by Macedonian anglers, way back in the 2nd century. The Macedonian anglers tied a piece of red wool round the hook. They would tie small feathers to the red wool and make it into an artificial fly. They carried out the fly-fishing quite successfully with the help of these primitive fly-making techniques.
]]>
American anglers from the Catskill Mountains in New York began to experiment with the dry-fly designs in the 18th century. They began to design artificial flies to imitate the native insects around the stream that trout feed on. The artificial flies fooled the trout into believing that an edible insect has landed on the water. This discovery encouraged the study of insect hatches to decide which kind of artificial fly would be most successful for fly-fishing at different locations and times.
Artificial flies are comprised of a hook. The hook is disguised to look like a living insect that the targeted fish like to eat; the fish are attracted by the motion or the color used to imitate the live insect. Artificial flies were made by using wool, fur, feathers and other natural materials. However, the artificial flies are now being made using synthetic material. Even though there are a wide variety of synthetic dry flies to choose from, the basic characteristics of fly design have not changed much over the years.
Another new development in the artificial fly design is the barb less hook. Many anglers now practice the catch and release method of fly-fishing wherein the fish that is caught is released back into the water. The barb less hook is easier for the angler to extract from the fish and it ensures that the fish is not injured in the process. There are thousands of designs and styles of artificial flies and a selecting the appropriate one is a challenge for the new anglers.
The materials used to disguise the hook may have changed form natural items to synthetic stuff, over the passage of time. Fur, wool and feathers were the choice of the earlier times. The newer synthetic materials include foam, Mylar, plastic and metals. These synthetic materials are either glued or tied on to the hook in various patterns to attract the fish.

Creative Ideas For Graduation Trips

]]>
As your school career draws to an end and you find yourself planning your high school or college graduation celebrations, you might decide you need to celebrate in a big way. A lot of people do this by planning a travel excursion. Following graduation, you may have a few weeks or months before your next life phase begins. If you are graduating from high school, you will not head off to college until the end of the summer. If you have graduated from college, you will hopefully be starting a job, but you may have planned a couple of weeks between graduation and your start date to give yourself a break. This is a wonderful time to plan a trip of some kind. There will be no other time in your life when you will have the freedom and sense of adventure you have following graduation, so you might as well take advantage of this and plan a once in a lifetime trip. A lot of people head for the beach and if you are a fan of water adventures, you might enjoy a kayak fishing excursion. Pack up your kayak fishing accessories and head for the great outdoors.
If you are more the indoor type and your idea of a sporting event or adventure is the retail variety, plan a shopping trip. For non-shoppers, this may sound crazy, but if you love roaming malls and outlets in search of a great deal, shopping vacations are like heaven. Instead of just heading to your local mall, travel to a destination known for its shopping. You can hit New York City, Las Vegas or the Mall of America in Minneapolis.
European travel often takes longer than an average week-long vacation, so if you hope to see the European countryside in your lifetime, this might be the time to do it. You can take a few weeks and visit all of the countries you hope to see by train. You are also young enough to enjoy staying in hostels, saving you a great deal of money during your travels. As you age, your patience and tastes will change, but when you are young, you are flexible and willing to give up creature comforts to enjoy the experience. Now is the time to plan a budget-friendly European excursion.
Some people prefer to satisfy their own desire to celebrate, but also feel like they are doing some good in the world. You can design a trip based on charity. This is especially true if you are graduating from college and you have special skills that can help the community. There are many doctors who are on their way to working in a hospital or private practice, but they take a few months to work in underdeveloped nations, lending their medical knowledge to those who need it most. You do not have to have special training to give back. Look for ways to volunteer your time and efforts in areas of the world that need you most.
Finally, consider planning a trip based on something you love. If you have a favorite book or movie, you can plan a trip around the theme. If there is no theme that is suitable for traveling, plan a trip to the hometown of the author to see where they drew their inspiration.

Reprint of the Famous Book “The Complete Guide to the Salmon River,” by George Douglas
Pulaski, NY (PRWEB) November 13, 2009
In the 1990′s, author, George Douglas published The Complete Guide to the Salmon River, a comprehensive guide to New York State’s Salmon River, a tributary of Lake Ontario that receives magnificent runs of salmon, steelhead and brown trout. Copies flew off the shelves and the book quickly became tough to find, because it is a wealth of information covering every inch of the Salmon River.
The book is packed with valuable information such as where to park, specific locations from which to cast from and an array of techniques that will produce a splash of action for each hole on the river. The river is approximately thirteen miles long and has multiple holes, slots, shoots and runs–and this book covers all them leaving no stone unturned. The title also has impressive chapters on preparation for fishing the river and the history and future of the fishery.
“After I heard this title was selling for over 0 per copy on Ebay, I had to stop the madness and reprint,” said Douglas. George Douglas is now the Publisher of Kype Fishing Magazine, named after the hook jaw on male salmon, trout and steelhead. This quarterly publication is truly unique as each issue comes with a full length fishing DVD. In a recent issue of Kype (Volume 1, Issue 4) Douglas wrote an in depth article on the Salmon River which explained how the river opened the door to his career and catapulted him to where he is today. Also, the DVD for that same issue, featured steelhead fishing on the Salmon River.
www.TheTugistheDrug.com is the new and official website for Kype Magazine and has a free social network for anglers to join and share photos, videos and discussions. This site is currently featuring live video feeds from Kype Magazine’s 2009 film tour. Check out these videos on the community at TheTugistheDrug.com. There is a drawing for the first one thousand members who join the community, with prizes ranging from Kype’s waterproof clothing line to a subscription of Kype Magazine. The Kype Nation Community is free to join and it takes only a minute.
This is also the site where you can ensure you get your hands on The Complete Guide to the Salmon River–they are presently accepting pre-orders as the book is expected to be printed and shipped in early December of this year, just in time for the holidays.
