This pike-like freshwater perch is a ‘perciform’ fish native to the northern United States and southern Canada. Walleye (Sander vitreus vitreus, or Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) is considered the North American relative of the European pikeperch, although they are not from the same family.
Walleye are usually larger than perch and can be distinguished from them by their scale color. Some walleyes are often referred to as yellow pike or pickerel, although this name should be discouraged because they are not pikeperch or pickerel fish, but yellow walleye is the right name, also used to distinguish it from the extinct blue walleye.
Walleyes show some of variation across watersheds, and its peculiar name comes from the fact that their eyes, not unlike those of cats, reflect light. The light on the eyes of the walleyes is the result of a light-gathering layer called the tapetum lucidum. This characteristic allows the fish to see well in low-light conditions.
Because Walleyes feed at night so anglers often look for them in the knowledge of their luminescent eyes. This fish can also see well in stained or rough turbid waters, giving them an advantage over their prey. Walleye is often found at the breaking waters of Minnesota, in the Mille Lacs Lake, Brainerd Lakes Area, Lake of the Woods, Rainy River, Kabetogama Lake, Leech Lake, Saint Croix River and the Mississippi River.
Other states with walleyes in their waters include Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Michigan, Ohio, Montana and Nebraska, besides of Canada, particularly in the Ontario and Toronto areas. Walleyes may be found lurking in turbid waters, but their natural habitat is located in clean waters, particularly deep mesotrophic lakes and moderate to low-gradient rivers.
Walleyes are “cool water” species that grow to about 30 inches (75 cm) in length, weighing approximately 15 lb (7 kg), although their growth rate depends sometimes on where in their range they occur. Southern populations usually grow larger and faster than other fish of the same family, however females of all walleye species grow larger than males.
It is not normal to find a walleye older that 5 or 6 years, but it is known that they can live for several decades. The oldest walleye recorded reached 29 years of age. Walleyes are olive color in dorsal and golden hue on the flanks, broken up by 5 dark saddles extending to their upper sides, and distinguished from sauger by their white coloration on the lower lobe of the tail.
Walleyes are best caught when the water temperatures get below 55º F, this is the reason why this fish is the favorite catch during fall, when also the turbidity of the rivers subsides the visual stimulating of walleyes, which can see their food floating, making it easier for the angler to see their activity.

No one really knows the history of walleye in Montana, but the news is getting out fast. Montana has some great areas for walleye fishing. The hotspot is Fort Peck Reservoir. The other area that you find anglers looking for walleyes is Bighorn Lake. Some even take in a June day at Canyon Ferry Reservoir. There is a little fact that most anglers have never heard, but the oldest walleye taken from the Fort Peck was said to be about eighteen years of age. In Montana, if the water temperatures are cold, you want to use a jig. Everyone knows that walleye are slower in cold waters therefore the jig works great.
When the water temperature warms up, you will want to switch to a crawler harness and a spinner or the crank bait for trolling. Anything that moves in the Montana waters is an attraction for walleye to seek and strike. If you ask some of the anglers in the area, they are going to tell you that you do not need an expensive rod and reel to hook a walleye. Of course, the more expensive rods will allow you to feel the movement of the line as the walleye inhales the bait.
The spinners and colors attracting Montana walleyes are silver, blue and chartreuse. Some anglers are even using bubble gum or watermelon colors. They are fishing from boats and off the shore. Wading and casting is best done in the rivers while boat fishing is the preferred way to fish the Montana lakes. The reservoirs you will be fishing in are huge, so your boat size might matter since most of the boats are going to large. Now for a list of all the other reservoirs in Montana that are considered hotspots for walleye fishing.
When fishing at Brighton Lake, you will want to use a jig by the steeper banks or do some trolling with crank bait. The Cooney Reservoir is a stocked fishing ground with some record setting fish being caught. In the later part of fall into the winter months, are perfect times to fish for walleye at Yellowstone River. Anywhere downstream from Hysham is a great area. Now, as mentioned before, Fort Peck Reservoir is the leader in Montana walleye fishing.
The only thing about fishing here is that you do need a good size boat to stay safe. You will fish the upper parts of the reservoir near Big Dry Arm around the early summer months, but more so by the dams during the middle of summer. The best time to fish walleye at Nelson Reservoir is during the month of June. Now, the Missouri River just about Fort Peck is a great place for walleye fishing after the ice disappears. If you like winter ice fishing for walleye, this is the place to be. Although the Tongue River Reservoir is known for bass and crappies, walleye fishing is also known to be good. The Fresno Reservoir by the Milk River has some nice sized walleyes coming from the area. Even though it has seen times of drought, the walleye are still hardy in the lake.
If you find yourself thinking about a fishing trip to Montana for walleye fishing, you will find more walleye in Fort Peck Lake than anywhere else in Montana. The over abundance of walleye is an almost sure bet that you are going to walk away with the daily catch limit. Although you need to be careful on this lake and use a good-sized boat, you will have not trouble trolling or sitting in one place to catch a walleye.

One of the best parts about the sport of fly fishing is experiencing the scenery and calmness around you as you are trying to land your big fish. Montana is a great place to find some solitude while fly fishing. In fact, the vast expanses that surround the rivers and streams in Montana can provide you with some of the most relaxing solitude anywhere.
Montana fly fishing is legendary. Anglers from all over the world travel to Montana to experience fly fishing the blue ribbon trout rivers and pristine mountain lakes. Whether an angler seeks to battle trophy sized wild rainbow trout on the Yellowstone River or to experience the solitude of a high mountain lake, Montana provides fly fishing experiences like no other place can.
Montana provides such an abundance of opportunities that visiting anglers frequently have difficulty in deciding where to start their fly fishing adventure. There are so many beautiful places in the hills of Montana that can provide both solitude and great fishing, many people might be overwhelmed. But so many choices provide for some amazing chances at bagging that championship fish!
For example, Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park is a beautiful spot for fly fishing. Flanked by mountains, this lake is not only a beautiful place to catch fish; it’s also an amazing spot for reflecting and relaxation.
Of course, the Yellowstone River is the longest river in Montana. It is free of any major dams, and its flow is not regulated in any way, so you can find an abundance of fish in the solitude of the mountain air. In fact, the Yellowstone River is internationally known as one of the premier trout rivers in the United States.
Even though you can expect to catch a variety of trout including rainbow and brown, you will also find whitefish and sturgeon aplenty. Even though the Yellowstone River is quite well known for its fly fishing in Montana, it is not overtaken by so many fly fishers that you can’t find a spot. It remains a beautiful secret available to those who are looking for the solitude of the Montana countryside.
Finding solitude while fly fishing in Montana is a relatively easy proposition. All you need to do is a little bit of research and ask around. Those who are proud of the fly fishing waters in Montana are always more than happy to share the beauty of their state with people who are wanting to fish the waters.
