Saltwater catfish look just like freshwater catfish with a white belly and their back and sides are a blue-gray color. However, there is one big difference that you will notice right away if you ever get stuck by one of its fins. Unlike most freshwater catfish you will find that even the slightest prick from a saltwater catfish can be very painful.
If you receive a full stick from one of these fins you can expect pain and swelling to happen right away. Many people even become a little sick to their stomachs when stuck by these fins. There have been many occasions where the person getting stuck by the fin of a saltwater catfish had to go to the hospital for treatment. Therefore, it is important that you always take precaution when handling these fish.
Many people fish for saltwater catfish because they love the taste of this species while others simply fish for the sport of catching them and then will throw them back in the water. They can put up a really big fight that makes catfishing a challenging adventure. Although there are some anglers that feel like they are just too much aggravation to bother with.
Best Places to Find Saltwater Catfish
There are several different types of saltwater catfish that can grow to various length and weights. However, there are two main types of saltwater catfish and they are called the hardhead catfish and the gafftopsail catfish. The average weight of these two saltwater catfish is one to two pounds but some can reach up to three or four pounds.
Both the hardhead and the gafftopsails catfish are abundant along the Atlantic coast from the most southern part of Mexico to as far north as Massachusetts. They can be found in just about any offshore waters that are approximately thirty feet deep and the Gulf of Mexico is definitely filled with this species of fish.
The hardhead catfish are most abundant near sandy bays, muddy waters and in the shallow of coastal waters. The gafftopsails catfish seem to prefer the deeper channels, bays and estuaries that have sandy bottoms with a high organic content. Many anglers have a lot of success fishing from piers, near shore lines and close to reeds because catfish tend to stay in this type of shaded areas.
Tips for Catching Saltwater Catfish
The following tips for catching saltwater catfish can be very useful. First, you need to know that catfish are considered scavengers and they feed along the bottom of the water. Therefore, most any technique that allows you to get near or on the bottom of the water can be very effective. They feed off most anything that is an easy target and that does not move.

Your article is very accurate. I got finned by one tonight in my finger. The pain was significantly worse than any bee or wasp sting. In fact, the pain was comparable to when I got stung by a Lion Fish a few years ago. It caused the adjacent knuckles to hurt and I was getting nauseated. I was glad to read your article and find that these are common and expected symptoms. Thanks.

Ventura, CA (PRWeb) April 5, 2008

The goal is to answer every question, and any possible discussion of walleye fishing deck. Dan Eggertsen, owner of the site, believes that 6 experts will be able to handle the load, and reached the goal of covering every subject.
“It may take several years, but we answer questions daily, and providing targeted articles on various techniques, situations, and places to catch a limit of walleye.
The key is to be consistent and provides a solid answers to the questions. We see increased traffic on the website resulting from the insistently delivered content. Of course, the quality is a key also.
Subjects are ranging from bait, provoke, drift fishing, conditions, jigging, trolling, and a variety of different platforms and technologies.

The real advantage to get into a kind of fishing is in the subtlety of your presentation and technique. Most anglers do not go far enough in what kind of things will boost the attack instincts in fish, so if you turn the extra mile and learning that they block, you head and shoulders above the average man on the water.
Our goal is to give you that subtle in a way that is easy to understand. “

Follow the Striper Fishing Migration Up and Down the United states Coast
(PRWEB) April 27, 2005
On the East Coast of the United States the striped bass species (morone saxitalis) ranges from the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Nova Scotia south to the Florida / Georgia border. On the Gulf coast, it is distributed from the Suwanee River, Florida, to eastern Texas. Only two East Coast reservoirs have self-sustaining populations: the Kerr Reservoir in Virginia and North Carolina, and the Santee-Cooper Reservoir in South Carolina.
Striped bass spawn from mid-February in Florida to late June or July in Canada. The migratory behaviors of coastal stripers are more complex than those of most other anadromous fish, which spend most of their adult lives in the ocean but migrate up rivers and streams to spawn. Their seasonal movements depend upon age, sex, degree of maturity and the river in which they were born. The major spawning activity for the entire East coast striper fishery is the Chesapeake Bay, (where it as known as the rockfish), the Roanoke River – Albemarle Sound watershed and the Hudson River. To a lesser degree the Delaware river and possibly many other rivers along the coast line. In South Carolinas Striped bass are native to the ACE Basin. (Ashepoo-Combahee-Edisto) They belong to the southern strain and behave quite differently from their northern relatives. Southern fish, unlike northern fish, never leave their riverine environments. Northern fish spend a considerable amount of time in near-shore waters and then ascend the rivers to spawn. Striped bass in the ACE Basin never enter the ocean, and it is strongly suspected that they never leave the river in which they are born. Striped bass are found in all the large rivers of the ACE Basin, and they over-winter in the estuarine areas of these systems near the saltwater-freshwater interface. Summers are spent in the cooler waters of the upper river, where springs and a dense canopy of trees keep water temperatures lower. They are often found in deep holes in the river or around structures such as old pilings.
Bass from North Carolina and the Chesapeake Bay are known to undertake coastwide migrations in addition to annual spawning migrations. They move north to New England and Canada during early spring and return between September and December. Bass inhabiting waters south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, typically do not take part in coastal migrations. Recent advances in molecular genetics have allowed researchers to investigate differences in populations of striped bass. Evidence strongly indicates that the rivers of the ACE Basin contain a population of striped bass that is unique to the basin.
A member of the perch family (Percichthyidae) the striped bass can be found on both the east and west coasts of the United States, although western stocks do not support a commercial fishery. The fish has been successfully introduced in numerous inland lakes, reservoirs and river systems across the U.S. and is now found also in Europe and Asia. The striped bass was first introduced to the West Coast in 1886, with fish from the Navesink River in New Jersey transported via rail to San Francisco Bay. The West Coast range of the species is from Los Angeles north to the Columbia River on the Oregon/Washington state border.
Striper fishing is now taking place from Ensenada, Mexico to British Columbia.
On the west coast most spawning occurs between 61 and 69 degrees and the spawning period usually extends from April to mid-June. Stripers spawn in open fresh water where the current is moderate to swift. The Delta, especially the San Joaquin River between the Antioch Bridge and the mouth of Middle River, and other channels in this area, is an important striper spawning ground. Another important spawning area is the Sacramento River between the city of Sacramento and Princeton. About one-half to two-thirds of the eggs are spawned in the Sacramento River and the remainder in the Delta.
