How To Catch Walleye In Kentucky

Walleye can sometimes be an elusive creature that forces anglers to think outside the box when trying to catch one on a line. Some days walleye hang out near the top of the water surface. Other days, they are content to lurk in the dark reaches of the water depths. Hiding behind large rocks and gravel overhangs for protection. It all depends on the day and mood of walleye. This white, flaky fish is suited for cold water in the medium water depths with gravel, sand or rock bottom surface.

Kentucky offers up a wealth of lakes and rivers that are home to walleyes of every shape and size. During spawn season, which occurs in early spring, walleye make the trek from the lakes into feeder streams. Other spawning areas include shallow clean surface bottoms that lie within tales reach of deeper waters. Walleye prefer murky water conditions with virtually no current.

One of the best lakes in Kentucky for fishing walleye is Dale Hollow Lake. This 28,000-acre lake is home to big sized walleye. Although the average is four pounds, there have been reports of walleye in excess of ten pounds or more coming from the waters. Situated along the Tennessee-Kentucky border approximately five miles south-west of Albany, Kentucky, Dale Hollow Lake is part of a hearty walleye stocking project. This results in flourishing walleye habitats that produce bigger size and quantities of the fish.

Other great Kentucky lakes for walleye fishing include the Green River Lake that is approximately two miles south of Campbellsville, Kentucky. Located in the central portion of the state, this lake is 8,200-acres in size. Another fantastic walleye hotspot is Lake Cumberland that produced the state record walleye weighing in at 21 lbs 8 oz. Located in the south-central portion of Kentucky, this lake is a massive 63,000-acres in size.

Outside of these, there is Laurel River Lake, which is 6,000-acres and located a mere two miles west of Corbin, Kentucky. Finally, there is Nolin River Lake for Kentucky walleye fishing. This 14,500-acre lake sits in the west-central portion of the state. In addition to lakes, Kentucky boasts a number of impressive rivers for walleye fishing. Some of the more notable ones include Worley and Blue Heron rivers.

The best times to fish in these rivers is nighttime during good moonlight exposure. With the right bait, walleye begin chasing what they think is a shiny minnow moving through the dark waters. Another river hotspot is the Joe Shoal. Sitting approximately one mile downstream from the Blue Heron Coal Mining Community Museum, this river reels in ten to thirteen pound walleye.

Spend a day learning to fly fish and open up the door to a lifetime of angling adventures and memories. Upon completion of this full day, comprehensive school, you will be skilled and confident enough to pack up your fly fishing gear and head out to enjoy a trip on the water of your choosing. The elements of the sport we feel are essential for beginners and cover in the school are as follows:

· Equipment Knowledge and Selection

· Casting Techniques & Presentation

· Reading Water

· Wading Techniques

The setting for our fly fishing schools is a sportsman club in Manchester, Indiana. The location is a short drive from Cincinnati, Ohio. The club is comprised of 1000 pristine acres of rolling hillsides housing 14 ponds and a man-made trout stream. The waters are home to largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, panfish, trout, carp, and catfish. In addition to the breathtaking scenery, a newly remodeled lodge with full amenities is at our disposal.

The fly fishing schools run from March-August. The cost of the school is 5 and includes all fly fishing equipment, a hearty lunch, and beverages. Accommodations at the lodge or nearby casino hotels are available, and we would be happy to make those arrangements for you. The schools are limited to 4 or 5 participants, ensuring a lot of personal attention.

Bass fishing is something that many may not know about. It rather has a fascinating story. Late 18th century saw its start and it has been developing till date. Many are now getting obsessed with this activity.

It has rather become the most admired activities of many people all around the globe. Many countries are now adopting this activity.

The people of southern United States possibly started it as a practice in search of food. Since then, it has been gaining a large audience from all age groups and countries. At present, many nations like United States, Cuba, Australia, South Africa and many from Europe take part in such events.

The birth year of bass fishing activity was 1768 or 1770.Onesimus Ustonson was one who pioneered his first multiplying spools to fishing experts and bass fishing admirers. Since then, it was expanded into a bait caster.

Shakespeare, William Jr. Lead the way to the creation of level wind tool for which he obtained its patent in 1897.

Successively, the excessively decorated Shannon Twin Spinner, introduced by William J.Jamison Co in 1915, was later bettered to make the spinner baits of todays.

Catching catfish by hand is a long standing practice that dates back to when the Native American population caught them that way. It used to be a must, of course, before the types of fishing equipment we commonly think of came into existence. Even with rudimentary fishing equipment, people still used methods of catfish fishing by hand.

Today, you are likely to see even more people searching for this seemingly new method of fishing for catfish. Anglers are often challenged in a unique way by this method of fishing. Most often, people are looking for a new way to simply get fish in hand. NO matter why you want to go catfish fishing by hand, chances are you will enjoy the process.

The popularity of the sport has grown, and has gotten a considerable amount of publicity since it was legalized in Missouri. Be aware, it is not as easy as it sounds. It is most definitely a sport to try though, especially if your passion is catfish.

There are currently eleven states that have legalized catfishing by hand, or ‘noodling’ as it is commonly called. Those eleven states include Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Kentucky.

The way in which catfishing by hand is carried out is somewhat interesting, to say the least. In hand fishing, the fisherman actually goes out into the water, dives down, and reaches into likely areas to find his prey, and haul it, by hand, out of the water. The only special equipment needed for handfishing is gloves that help protect fishermen from the rows of sharp teeth in a catfish’s mouth. Advocates state that this is a traditional method of fishing for catfish dating back to our native American roots, while others are alarmed by the often dangerous practice.

Many people who practice handfishing, or noodling, actually plant boxes in catfish rich areas, in which they hope to entice catfish to spawn. Others simply rely on the natural spawning grounds to attract these catfish. The catfish in turn spawn in these areas, leaving mature males to guard their nest. The handfishermen then dive down to likely areas such as submerged hollow logs, rocky outcroppings, or underwater caves. They reach inside these areas, hoping to find catfish there, allow these fish to bite down on their arms, and physically pull them from their nest. They then wrestle them to the bank.

Those who oppose the practice site that it is dangerous and causes many injuries to those who partake in this sport. Indeed, it does cause numerous injuries. Perhaps the worst possibility is that you might find something other than catfish in the area in which you search. Many handfishermen find the snakes, snapping turtles, or even alligators that also inhabit these areas rather than the catfish they are seeking. In fact, most people who have noodled for catfish bear the proof on their flesh. Scars and missing digits are not uncommon sights in noodlers.

Those who oppose the practice of hand fishing state that, since regulations state that since only mature catfish may be caught when noodling, this type of fishing might deplete the catfish population. Most states do have regulations on the size of catfish which can be caught when noodling, but the fact is that the spawning grounds of catfish are always heavily fished by fishermen, and there is absolutely no evidence what so ever that the practice of handfishing for catfish has depleted the catfish population.

A long-lived debate amongst catfish anglers worries which fishing lure is most powerful for catching major catfish: smell fishing bait or dwell fishing lure. The reply is each.
