postheadericon Cabelas? Prepares to Cast New Fly Fishing Initiative

Sidney, NE (PRWEB) April 06, 2012

Cabelas Incorporated, the Worlds Foremost Outfitter? of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, along with the Federation of Fly Fishers, announced today plans to offer industry-leading instruction for beginning fly anglers at 13 Cabelas retail locations and online starting in May.

The new Cabelas Fly Fishing University will include in-store classes hosted by experienced Cabelas Outfitters, who will be trained by FFF instructors, as well as a series of online modules ranging in topics and depth. Those who enroll in either program will receive a free electronic FFF membership and other special offers. All classes are free.

In-store instruction will run every Saturday from May until August, covering equipment, basic insect information, casting and knot tying. Participating Cabelas retail locations include Boise, Idaho; Reno, Nev.; Billings, Mont.; Hamburg, Pa.; Dundee, Mich.; Scarborough, Maine; Grand Junction, Colo.; East Hartford, Conn.; Fort Worth, Texas; Lacey, Wash.; Lehi, Utah; Post Falls, Idaho; and Wheeling, W. Va.

The online modules are expected to launch this summer.

This is the perfect way to learn the basics of a sport that leads to a lifetime of enjoyment, said Jeff Wagner, of Cabelas, who is a Mastered Certified Instructor and serves on the FFF board. We hope this promotes fly fishing as a whole and ensures the stability of the sport for many generations to come.

For in-class instruction, participants may enroll in individual, one-hour courses Beginners Fly Fishing or Beginners Fly Casting or combine both for a total of two hours of instruction time each session. The Beginners Fly Fishing class will provide an introduction to the sport with a focus on basic techniques and skills. The Beginners Fly Casting course will emphasize the fundamentals of fly casting, including overhead techniques and roll casting.

Courses will be led by knowledgeable Cabelas Outfitters who have completed an intensive, all-encompassing 40-hour training class hosted by FFF instructors and Cabelas personnel, with an emphasis on teaching the sport.

The online modules will range from Beginners Fly Fishing to more detailed instruction about fly casting, flies and insect biology, leaders, tippet and backing, and fly line, rods and reels, among other topics.

Participants are encouraged to utilize both the retail and online options.

Theres a link between the retail classes and the online modules, and the instruction will be consistent, Wagner said. If anglers go online and take the Beginners Fly Fishing module, they can then go to a Cabelas retail store and take Beginners Fly Casting. Or, if they take the Beginners Fly Casting course at a retail store, and want to learn more, they can go online and receive in-depth material.

For additional information, please contact your local Cabelas store, or visit http://www.cabelas.com.

Going for the Big Ones – Tips For Catching Blue Catfish

Blue catfish are a species of catfish that love to live in the big rivers. Look for them in the Mighty Mississippi, the Rio Grande, anywhere there’s a rushing current and too much water to wade across.

These cats are similar to their cousins, the channel cat, but different in a few ways. For one thing, they have a distinct blue coloring (which gives them their name). The back has a bluish tint, and their underbelly is white. But the biggest way you can tell it’s a blue, is that they have a forked tail. You won’t see any other catfish like this. Other than that, blues are so similar they are often mistaken for channel catfish, and in some parts of the country the locals won’t make any distinction between them.

Another thing that sets blues apart is that they are on the big end of the scale. Usually blues are between 20 and 40 pounds, although there are some legendary blue catfish that are well over 100 pounds! If you are an angler in Texas, you’ve probably seen some 50 pound blues in your time. These are big fish, and that’s why we want to target ‘em!

Tips on Catching Blue Cats

- First off, bait is always important. Blues, more than any other kind of catfish, love live bait. Take in something that is or once was alive, and the stinkier the better. Blue catfish are known for going after live bait much younger than other fish, so using good, live, stinky bait will get you blues. Blue catfish also have an especially keen sense of smell, so baits that smell funny will work much better than ordinary stuff. Probably your best bet is to use some kind of bait fish, or smaller catfish. Chicken livers, dried chicken blood and nightcrawlers work well too.

- Use a pretty good-sized hook. Anything from 3/0 to 9/0 will work well. Remember, these are pretty big catfish. You’ll probably want to cut your bait 6 to 12 inches long.

- Blue catfish are known as fighters. Be ready for a battle! These stubborn fish don’t want to come out of that water for any reason whatsoever, so you should make sure you have a good, tough rod to pull him out with. Also, make sure you have a strong line and heavy tackle.

- Blue cats like to stick to cool waters. The best time to go out looking for them is in the fall, from September to December. They’ll be out feeding much later than other species of catfish. It depends a little bit on where you live, but definitely fall and early spring are the best times to catch them. In places like Iowa and Idaho, anglers have been known to catch some pretty big blue cats in the winter time.

- Pick a good spot. There are lots of blues hanging out in the bottom of that big river, but pick a little tributary with enough rushing water, and you might have better luck. Look for an area that is deeper than the rest of the river or stream. The best spot is just past a rapid. Here, there will be a calm pool that the rapid empties out into, and all that rushing water plunging into the pool will make a depression at the bottom. This is the perfect spot for blue catfish to be in. Fish these spots, and you’ll improve your chances of catching a blue.

Stink Bait and Live Bait strategy in Big Catfish’s fishing

A long-lived debate amongst catfish anglers worries which fishing lure is most powerful for catching major catfish: smell fishing bait or dwell fishing lure. The reply is each. That is why: Catfish possess a sense of scent a lot more potent than a bloodhound’s and so they goal wounded prey with shark-like ferocity. But that is the bottom line: Smell fishing lure catches probably the most catfish, but dwell fishing lure catches the greatest. Preferred stay baits contain even…

Best Three Tips to Successful Idaho Steelhead Fishing

Regardless of which task you will be dealing with, having good and sound advice will help you. Using a guide, a “track to run on,” may help greatly to get it done. The three basic tips set forth in the following paragraphs can help you achieve a successful Idaho steelhead fishing. For those who follow these tips you may really be expecting much better outcomes.

While you often have a guide, usually assigned by most Idaho fishing lodges, along when you are fishing for steelhead, it is actually necessary that you yourself have the knowledge to do things right. If you don’t, the outcomes could, in fact, be upsetting. Like any other fisherman, experienced steelheaders have their own methods of landing and catching a lunker.

1. Jigs have to be pink, black, chartreuse, reds and purple. Or, if a jig is not available, just work with a hook with shrimp or sucker meat. You must also have a bobber, which is needed to help keep the jig from getting dangled up in rubble and debris on the bottom level of the stream. Position the bobber to keep the jig approximately six inches to one foot above the stream bottom.

2. Get some steelhead eggs (roe), place them in a red mesh fabric and tie it to the fish hook. Place a sinker about one foot to eighteen inches above the line, so the eggs will float off the bottom. Almost as important as making sure that jigs are of right colors when you’re out for a steelhead fishing is to ensure the eggs and sinker are placed correctly. I am telling you, it’s not something to miss out. It will help you catch the lunker, which is something every person involved in Idaho steelhead fishing desires for.

3. Make use of streamer flies in reds, yellows, pinks, black or orange. Tie some crystal flash in the tail. Woolly buggers or any kind of leach pattern in darker colors should work. Some steelheaders hook a tiny piece of shrimp or night crawler to the hook. As a final point, when fishing you’ll need to be sure to use streamer flies. These flies must be weighted in order to get them near the bottom of the stream, which is also a required component in Idaho steelhead fishing.

Like your fellow steelheaders, your ultimate goal is to catch that big steelhead fish. You certainly can accomplish that goal by paying attention to the lectures of your guide and by being attentive to the strategies in this article.

postheadericon Indicators Point to Great Fall Steelhead Fishing

Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) June 20, 2006

Weak spring salmons runs may indicate greater than normal migration of steelhead into the rivers of the northwest. Bob Rafalovich, a fishing guide for 33 years, predicts that 2006 may produce one of the strongest steelhead seasons in recent years in the Northwest. “I have seen this pattern before. Weak spring salmon runs are often followed by bountiful steelhead runs,” said Rafalovich. “Salmon and steelhead compete for the same food supply in the ocean and for some reason, in years when the salmon runs are weak, steelhead runs are great.” America Outdoors, a national association of outfitters, offers a resource to find steelhead fishing outfitters as well as wilderness trout fishing vacations.

Fly fishermen, who prefer more traditional trout fishing, can also find unique fly fishing trips. The headwaters of the Snake River deep in the Bridger Teton wilderness is an example of another special fishing experience available to those willing to ride on horseback into camp. If horses aren’t your thing, fishing from a drift boat in Montana or on the Middle Fork of the Salmon also offers access to special locations that only a few people experience each year. When the steelhead are running your chances of catching a big one are high on the Rogue or Main Salmon River in Idaho where lodge to lodge fishing trips land you in the lap of rustic luxury every night.

David Brown, Executive Director of America Outdoors, an organization of outfitters and guides, says fishing is one of the highlights of their family vacation in the wilderness. “We visit high mountain lakes and catch cutthroat all day. Fishing in a peaceful valley overlooked by a few puffy white clouds miles from the nearest road is as close to heaven as it gets for a fly fisherman. It takes a little work to get there but with an outfitter to take care of all your equipment and food, it’s a lot easier.”

Adventurevacation.com, the America Outdoors website for vacationers, lists guided fishing trips throughout the United States. Type in “fishing” in the activity search at the bottom of the home page and more than 80 companies, lodges and guest ranches show up. To search for fishing trips in a specific state such as Montana, West Virginia, Maine or Idaho, simply click on the state on the homepage map and type in the keyword fishing or fly fishing.

Beginners are welcomed. Learn a new life skill and take home memories that will stay long after the trip. For more information, visit AdventureVacation.com .
