Tharp Leads Walmart FLW Tour Major on Beaver Lake Presented by Straight Talk

A full field of the best bass-fishing professionals from all across the United States, Canada, Spain and Japan opened the Walmart FLW Tour Major on Beaver Lake presented by Straight Talk on Thursday. Anglers used a variety of strategies and tactics beneath the sunny Arkansas skies as they began the competition for a top cash award of up to $ 125,000.
Despite the multiple techniques the professionals employed, the results were very similar just 2 pounds, 3 ounces separated first place from 10th. At the end of the day, EverStart pro Randall Tharp of Gardendale, Ala., held the day one tournament lead with a five-bass limit weighing 15 pounds, 7 ounces. Tharp has a 12-ounce lead over Snapple pro Jacob Powroznik of Prince George, Va., who caught five bass weighing 14-11.
Im pretty pleased with my weight today, said Tharp, who has career winnings of more than $ 640,000. But I believe I can catch more fish tomorrow, especially if the wind is blowing. I dont think anyone else is doing what Im doing. Im fishing a certain bait on certain banks and its real unique.
Tharp said he fished areas that he had not targeted in practice. Although he chose to start his day near areas where he had found fish during practice, most of his fish came from areas that he had not fished before.
I had a real good practice coming into this tournament, Tharp continued. Im known for practicing from daylight to dark, but for this event I was finishing up around 4 p.m. That was mostly because I did not want people to see where I was fishing. I made sure that I was real cautious today as well I tried not to stay in one spot for too long.
I caught four today very early within the first 15 minutes. I had a limit by 8:15 a.m., Tharp went on to say. I ran pretty far up the river and I caught some up there, and I caught some in the clear water down in the lake. The lake is really unique right now due to the water conditions and the (water) level being down. Several of the bass that I weighed in today were pre-spawn, I saw two spawners and there were quite a few post-spawn fish as well. All five of my bass were largemouth today.
Despite the odd conditions, Tharp is still extremely confident about the remainder of his tournament.
Beaver Lake is a real tough lake, but thats when I seem to do my best. I believe that there is a bigger bag out there. Im pretty confident in my pattern, and believe Im going to be fishing all four days this week. Im more confident right now than I was earlier this year when I won at Okeechobee.

Romans caught Thursdays big bass weighing 5 pounds, 7 ounces on the pro side to win $ 500.
Overall there were 625 bass weighing 1,144 pounds, 8 ounces caught by pros Thursday. The catch included 92 five-bass limits.
Kettle Brand Chips pro Dan Morehead of Paducah, Ky., had his day one weight zeroed after inadvertently fishing in an area designated as off-limits for competition.
Pros are competing for a top award of up to $ 125,000 this week plus valuable points in the hope of qualifying for the 2012 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart, the world championship of bass fishing. The top 35 anglers in the point standings from the six Walmart FLW Tour Major tournaments will qualify.
Chad Pipkens of Holt, Mich., leads the Co-angler Division with five bass weighing 10-12 followed by Rich Dalbey of Greenville, Texas, in second place with five bass weighing 10-11.

Pipkens caught Thursdays big bass weighing 4-8 in the co-angler division to win $ 250.
Overall there were 275 bass weighing 420 pounds, 12 ounces caught by co-anglers Thursday. The catch included 13 five-bass limits.
Co-anglers are fishing for a top award of $ 25,000 this week plus valuable points that could help them qualify for the 2012 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart. The top 35 co-anglers in the point standings from the six Walmart FLW Tour Major tournaments will qualify.
Anglers will take off from Prairie Creek Park located at 9300 North Park Road in Anderson at 6:30 a.m. each morning. Fridays weigh-in will also be held at Prairie Creek Park beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sundays final weigh-ins will be held at the John Q. Hammons Center located at 3303 Pinnacle Hills Pkwy. in Rogers beginning at 4 p.m.
Fans will be treated to the FLW Outdoors Expo at the John Q. Hammons Center on Saturday and Sunday from noon – 4 p.m. prior to the final weigh-ins. The Expo includes Ranger boat simulators, the opportunity to interact with professional anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by sponsors, and fans can learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities. All activities are free and open to the public. On Sunday the first 300 children 14 and under who are accompanied by an adult will receive a free rod and reel combo courtesy of US94 KAMO-FM Country. Also on Sunday one lucky fishing fan will win a Can-Am ATV courtesy of KNWA. The ATV giveaway is free to enter but the winner must be present at the conclusion of Sundays final weigh-in to win.

Alabama bass fishing has been making waves for years amongst the bass fishing enthusiasts of the local area and indeed the world, year after year bass fisherman and women flock there in their droves for a piece of the action, and with good reason. If you are yet to experience the action for yourself then you should begin to think about a trip to the South because you can choose from the many lakes and all three breeds that are native there the largemouth bass, the smallmouth bass and the spotted bass!
The problem with bass fishing in Alabama is the multitude of choices you have here. You can choose from several lakes, even more lures and baits that work and type of bass. After all it is the bass fishing capital of the Deep South! Below you will find a quick guide to the best lakes on offer so you can at least plan that before taking a road trip there!
Lake Guntersville
Lake Guntersville is the lake of choice for many bass fishing enthusiasts that head to Alabama. It is the largest lake in the state at over 69,000 acres and is easily accessible because it is just 90 miles from the city of the same name.
However, be prepared to feel hemmed in if you do not get here early enough to pick your spot because it is also the busiest lake in the state. Amateur and professional bass fishing enthusiasts all come here because the lake is simply alive with bass and it is thought that the numbers living in the murky depths are increasing!
The vegetation coverage in Lake Guntersville is certainly unique but is also at the optimum level for the bass at 20. The bass tend to hide in it so you may want to try out a spot of winter bass fishing here if you are considering braving the colder weather for your love of the sport! Whether it is winter or summer, Lake Guntersville offers several prime areas to fish in, namely the point at which the flats drop off and the creek channels.
Both offer a plentiful supply of bass so you should go home feeling very successful after a day there!
The best time for fishing is April so plan a trip for then if possible. In term of the lures and baits that work best here, try a spinnerbait or crankbait for the best results. They are both favourites of the bass fishing enthusiasts that frequent the area. You could try plastic worms as well because they are often effective. Also, keep you line above a depth of 7 feet. Use a Texas rig and you will not go far wrong!
Pickwick Lake
Pickwick Lake is the place to be if you want to fish for smallmouth bass because the lake is absolutely teeming with them. Some research has actually proved that it is possible to catch almost on smallmouth bass every minute so that is certainly a record to aim for if you like to be competitive! In terms of weight as well, Pickwick Lake is better than most of the other lakes in the state for steady weights that can average above 5lbs.

Who doesn’t love to go crappie fishing? If you’re a fisherman who’s never tried your hand at crappie then you are missing out on an interesting and entertaining time. The first thing you need to know, however, is that crappie are often very dependent on their environment which means where you will be fishing has a big impact on how you should go about it.
Will you be crappie fishing in Alabama? The state of Alabama has some of the best fishing locations in the country both for freshwater and saltwater fish. If you want to try your hand at crappie, Alabama is a great place to do it. Lakes, streams, ponds and other water sources will have crappie available to you. All you need to know is horst, you need to know what time of year you are fishing in. The season plays a big role in how the crappie will react and how you need to go about catching them. The most ideal time to fish for crappie in Alabama is during the spring. This is when they are most available and seem easier to bite. Winter and especially fall seem to be the most difficult for catching crappie.
But this does not mean that you can’t still go crappie fishing during any of the seasons, you just need to know how to do it properly. No matter what time of year you are fishing, crappie tend to prefer brightly colored lures and bait. They can see in colors and will respond to them accordingly. Most crappie fishermen try bright reds, oranges and greens.
If fishing in fall or winter, the crappie will be deeper in the waters and you may want to try scented bait as well as colors since the water could be cloudy, especially if you are fishing in muddy waters of Alabama. You may need to allow more time for the fish to see and respond to your bait and line in cooler or muddier temperatures.
Remember when fishing for crappie in Alabama not to get too aggressive, especially when you get bites and nibbles. If you pull on the line too roughly or too quickly, you will most likely lose the fish. Crappie are more sensitive fish and you can tear the hook through their mouths and lose the catch. So allow a nibble for a bit and then reel it in gently.
